Overwhelmed

I know that I haven't posted anything in a while. So, let me catch you up.

I have spent a lot of time the summer attending pre-MBA workshops. For all of you that are planning to attend business school in the future, I highly recommend going to these workshops. They really do a great job of introducing you to different industries. And if you are interested in consulting, the introduction to the case interview that I received at Bain's Pre-MBA Workshop was phenomenal (although, I am not sure if consulting is for me).

Second, it is very difficult to setup a place in Chicago from over one-thousand miles away. But I did it! I, now, have an apartment waiting for me and will be moving in at the end of the month. It's a great building and there's a good number of “Boothies” there.

Third, I have decided not to take my car. GOD HELP ME!!! I have had a car for over half of my life and not having one at my disposal is very scary to me. But I plan to take advantage of Zip Car.

Lastly, TODAY IS MY LAST FULL DAY AT WORK!!! I will be a full-time student for the first time in a long time. It's scary knowing that the paychecks will stop but I trying not to focus on that.

So, now you are all caught up! I hope that things will be a little more interesting and that I will blogging more; Especially since I am finally moving to CHICAGO!!!

Guess Who’s back In The House!!!

Hello, blogging world!!! It’s been so long since I last posted that you all are probably wondering what’s going what happened to me. Well, my life has been “action-packed” to say the least. And although I won’t go into too much detail, I will let you all know that the move to Chicago….DIDN’T HAPPEN!!! Because of personal reasons I had to defer my admissions to Booth until this fall. So, as you can see, I haven’t forgotten about you all…there just hasn’t been much to tell on the b-school front. However, I am promising to keep you all update on my b-school experience and to post more often.

To MLT or Not To MLT…That is the Question

I saw this posting on BusinessWeek …

I have been looking into some pre-MBA minority admissions programs like Management Leadership for Tomorrow, Riordan Fellows, etc. I began to wonder if all the hassle is worth it to become involved with a program like that if you already have decent credentials. I mean, I went to UCLA, 3.3gpa, good job...and judging by my performance on the LSAT, I think I will do 650+ on the GMAT. Will having a minority program name on my app give me more of a boost than if I didn't (all other things being equal)? I am Hispanic.

Have you ever watched the show “America’s Next Top Model”? I never miss it! I love how at the beginning of each season Tyra Banks hand-selects some awkward looking girl from the middle-of-nowhere, turns her over into the capable hands of some hot-shot hair stylist and make-up artist who, in-return, turn this “ugly duckling” into a “beautiful swan”. Now, were the hair stylist and make-up artist some sort of magicians who had the power to turn funny-looking women into Haley Berry? Of course not! They just enhanced the beautiful features/qualities that Tyra recognized in the young lady. That’s what organizations like Management Leadership for Tomorrow and The Riordan Programs do for minority business school applicants.

One of the questions that the posting asked was “if all the hassle is worth it to become involved with a program like that if you already have decent credentials?” These programs (and let me say that I know much more about one program than I do the other) are definitely worth the "hassle". The networking and coaching opportunities that you receive as result of your participation cannot be matched. And you are member of an organization that is full of people who have common goals and sincerely wants to see everyone succeed. I think that alone is worth the "hassle".

If you are looking to apply to bschool in the future, you owe it to yourself to check out these programs. Trust me, you won’t regret it!

Cornell Says "No", But I Don't Care!!!

Today, I received this...

Dear Bschool Diva,

The Admissions Committee of the Johnson School at Cornell University has completed a comprehensive review of your application. After careful consideration, we are not able to offer you admission to the Johnson School.

We appreciate the time and effort taken to complete your application. This was a difficult decision for us, as we know you have many strong attributes. Competition was especially rigorous, and unfortunately, we have had to deny admission to many fine candidates.

We thank you for your interest in the Johnson School and wish you the very best in your future endeavors.

For the Admissions Committee,

Randall T. Sawyer
Director of Admissions & Financial Aid

Oh well, can you say "Chicago"? I like the Johnson School, but I wasn't going there anyway.

Still Waiting

I interviewed with Cornell last Friday and was told that I would receive a decision within a week. That means I can hear something any day now.

While getting ready for work this morning, I heard a report on some research performed by two professors from The Johnson School. I took that as a sign that I would get some good news today. Let’s see.
